Today in class, during a fun exchange with a small group, I heard one of the best compliments I have ever gotten from a student. “You know, Profesora Johnson, you talk to me like a person.”
I’ll be mulling that over for a while. Part of it is that I don’t feel any older than my college-age students, so I talk to them like equals because I think of them as equals. Part of it is that I find social appropriateness difficult — I’m a mess at doing and saying the right thing. It’s just nice to hear that at least one student interprets my actions favorably.
